Why My Plates Make Me Feel Less Alone (And a Good Gift Idea)
·
·
I set my table with a mix of things; some are old, some are new, and then there is the stuff I still want to buy (more on that another time). I still use my grandmother's plates, the same ones she asked me to set out at her table every summer in Salzburg, Austria. I am not the only person who uses old things passed down through generations, so this feeling is relatable; you feel you are not alone somehow.
These plates were there when we ate homemade Schnitzel and Nockerl with my Oma and Opa, and I wore my favorite yellow Dirndl. These plates knew my Mother, Rike, who I'd give the world to have dinner with again. And now, I set my table with them on special occasions so my kids will also get to know them.
These particular green-speckled plates have been discontinued (if Gmundner Keramik wants to start making this pattern again, I would be overjoyed), but all of their ceramics are beautiful, and it is definitely an item I would suggest as a gift. Another pattern below, the pink polka dots, is also a favorite.
